Less is often more with drama
Returning series have their pace but let’s champion shorter tales too, say Anthony Kimble.
Without a doubt, Chernobyl has been one of 2019’s drama highlights. A compelling script, stellar performances, meticulous detail and brilliant production values earned it critical acclaim and numerous awards. However, for me, its most laudable elements was its length. Just five exquisite hours of perfect TV.
In this much-debated ‘golden age of drama’, mini- and close-ended limited series are few and far between. This is disappointing on many levels – not least as they should be easier to finance and easier to sell to on – and off- screen talent than longer, returnable series.
